Tuberculosis (TB) is a classic example of a disease with both medical and social dimensions, characterised by its close relation to poor socioeconomic conditions. The key elements in any TB control programme are –Early diagnosis and immediate initiation of treatment. The goal of RNTCP/any TB control programme is to arrest transmission of TB within the community. Achieving this goal takes considerable time, because most individuals in endemic areas are already infected, constituting a reservoir that continuously contributes to the pool of infectious cases.
