Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms have caused major therapeutic problems worldwide because majority are resistant to various antibiotics. Increasing prevalence of infections especially urinary tract infections caused by ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae has become a growing concern in hospitalized patients. Pattern of ESBL producing organisms differ significantly in accordance with geographic location. As ESBL producing organisms continue to emerge, selection of empirical treatment modalities is an increasing challenge.
